A big game on home ice Sat. afternoon

1st Period - we come out a little sluggish and it carries thru the entire period - we are outshot 8-4 but escape unscathed at 0-0

2nd Period - we start the period with a little more jump and get a goal at 8:14, really a PP goal though it was one second in to even up - the goal was a nice 2 assist goal Carceo from Hurd and Sullivan - later at 11.10 Pat Byrne put in a typical goal for him, you can't quite describe what happens, with assists to Martin and Smitherman - we immediately go into a 4 on 4 situation which then goes to 3 on 4 and Kretzman pots one for Amherst at 13:17 and that is how the period ends 2-1 us and the shots were 10-8

3rd Period - we get off to a rotten start with an Amherst score at 1:12 into the period to make it 2-2 - the pace of the game picks up and both clubs are playing well - we get a PP at 10:57 and Hurd puts it home at 11:59 for the 3-2 lead - assists to Sullivan and Carceo - again the play is up and down until 17:15 when we take a penalty, this goes to 4 on 4 at 18:04 and Amherst pulls the goalie and scores at 18:21 to tie it up - it then goes back to 4 on 4, then 4 on 3, then 5 on 3 for the last 44 seconds but we cannot score - shots are 6-8

Overtime - we start with a few seconds of 5 on 3 then a minute or so on the PP but no scoring - play is very even for a couple of minutes and finally Amherst wins it on a deflection of some sort, no one really saw it, at 3:42 - an unassisted goal from inside the goal line, in other words it was not an intended shot but a pass out of the corner - a tough way to end a game that neither team deserved to lose

A very bitter loss for the troops - I said before the season started that we would be in a lot of games right down to the wire and our ties and one or two goal games bear that out
The good news is that with our win on Fri and Wesleyan's losses, combined with Conn Col's tie and a loss, assures us of a playoff spot - the Wesleyan and Trinity games are still important in sorting out where Tufts, Amherst and Williams (and perhaps Hamilton) finish

Hamilton 9-7-1 19
Amherst 7-7-3 17 Amherst has the tiebreaker with Tufts and Williams
Tufts 7-8-2 16 Tufts has the tiebreaker with Williams
Williams 7-8-2 16
these teams in some order will play at Middlebury, Trinity, Colby and Bowdoin on March 1st

Fri at 7:30 at Wesleyan and Sat 7:30 at Trinity be there
